My mom bought my an Ipod Touch this week as a gift since my weight loss/training is going so well.
Apple released the new 3rd gen version this week and I went to Best Buy to see if they had any. It turns out they had the old 2nd gen on sale. The 16gb version was $216 and the 32gb was out of stock. I went with the 16gb and eventually took it back and went to another Best Buy store and ended up getting the 32gb version for only $27 more. The Ipod Touch 32gb 2nd gen version ended up only costing about $247 or so. Not bad considering Sam's is still selling them for $399!
I did a lot of research before deciding why I should go with the 2nd gen over the 3rd gen version:
a) I don't really need the upgraded CPU. I only plan on playing movies, music and an occasional game.
b) The 2nd gen version has better battery life
c) It's on sale!
d) The new firmware can be purchased
Obviously, if the 2nd gen is not on sale, the 3rd gen is best for most people. It's too bad they didn't drop the 8gb in the lineup and start with 16gb. Discontinuing the 16gb version was a mistake I think.
I also picked up some blue-tooth headphones for it. I was actually surprised that the sound quality was pretty decent. The only problem is that the bass is overpowering, so I had to use the "Bass Reducer" setting. I guess these days, more bass is always better. Not to me! I tested them and could walk about 30-35 feet before the sound cut out. In the hour i've used them so far I haven't had any cutoffs. They're the Motorola S9-HD headphones. There is a previous version that's less expensive, but I think this are probably much better. You can get them online for about $65. I just bought them locally to save on shipping.
It's too bad that the Ipod touch doesn't allow the headphones to skip tracks. Not a big deal though.
